Second Annual #i{craft}history Festival

 

Two-day event celebrates the living history museum’s dedication to craft with artisans, exhibits, music, food, and festivities

Plymouth, MA – September 2, 2015 – Plimoth Plantation is hosting a weekend-long event dedicated to craft at the museum’s second annual #i{craft}history Festival, September 26 and 27. The event will take place at the museum’s recently expanded Craft Center and living history sites.

The theme #i{craft}history seeks to engage the public to learn about the many forms of craft that are integral to a living history museum, as well as those that enrich our lives. Open to the public, the launch includes a full slate of fun and activities for everyone. On Saturday and Sunday, September 26 and 27, Massachusetts residents can purchase half-priced Heritage passes for admission to Plimoth Plantation, Plimoth Grist Mill, and Mayflower II. As part of the celebration the museum will also offer free admission to Plymouth residents.

Yankee Magazine is the media partner of this two-day festival that features the best of New England craft, old and new. Many New England makers, inspired by either the time period Plimoth Plantation represents or the historical Plymouth landscape, will present demonstrations and workshops. Plimoth Plantation’s very own artisans are at the heart of this event. Their work is vital to the recreation of the authentic look and feel of Plimoth Plantation’s 17th-century world.  At the museum, Native artisans make stone, wood and sinew tools, porcupine hair headdresses and hand-coiled clay pots. Other Plimoth Plantation artisans practice historical English trades, and reproduce the objects that the Pilgrims imported from England, such as earthenware pottery, furniture, candles and textiles. In addition to featuring Plimoth Plantation’s staff artisans, the event will bring together guest handcrafters across a wide range of disciplines—from beekeeping to weaving—to demonstrate and teach diverse skills.

New to this year’s event is an artisan market located in the Museum’s Henry Hornblower II Visitor Center courtyard, where guests will be able to purchase items crafted by our featured artisans.

Plimoth Bread Co. has completed its first year, and master artisan baker Tani Maurello will demonstrate the wood-fired techniques that help create our exclusive 17th century-inspired Thirded Bread.

Plimoth Plantation is a living museum dedicated to telling the history of Plymouth Colony from the multiple perspectives of the Pilgrims and the Native Wampanoag people.
